Weather Expectations
Seasonal Weather Expectations
Route climate at a glance: This itinerary sits in tropical Queensland. Expect a wet season (roughly Nov–Apr) with heat, humidity and summer storms, and a dry season (May–Oct) with warm days, lower humidity and clearer skies. Inland on the Atherton Tablelands is cooler than the coast, especially at night.
Summer (Dec–Feb)
- Airlie Beach / Whitsundays: ~24–31 °C, humid; afternoon storms possible. Sea ~27–29 °C.
- Cairns / Port Douglas / Mission Beach: ~24–32 °C, very humid; frequent showers and the highest chance of heavy rain.
- Notes: UV is extreme; hydrate often. Reef trips may adjust sites or timing to suit conditions.
Autumn (Mar–May)
- Whitsundays: ~22–28 °C; humidity easing through April–May; sea ~25–27 °C.
- Cairns / Port Douglas: ~22–30 °C; rainfall tapering; waterfalls are full from the wet.
- Tablelands: Pleasant days, cooler evenings—pack a light layer.
Winter (Jun–Aug)
- Whitsundays: ~18–24 °C; dry and sunny; sea ~22–24 °C.
- Cairns / Port Douglas / Mission Beach: ~18–27 °C; dry, warm days and mild nights—prime reef and rainforest weather.
- Tablelands: Cool mornings/evenings; a jumper helps.
Spring (Sep–Nov)
- Whitsundays: ~21–28 °C; warming quickly, rising UV.
- Cairns / Port Douglas: ~22–31 °C; humidity building toward the wet season.
- Sea temps climb; conditions are generally settled, with occasional windy days.
Rain, storms & cyclones
- Heaviest rain is typically Dec–Mar. Cyclone season is generally Nov–Apr; systems are monitored closely and plans adjust if needed. Short tropical downpours are common—fast-drying clothing is useful.
Wind & sea state
- Trade winds can freshen, especially around the Whitsundays (common mid-year). Reef/island operators choose the most sheltered sites available on the day; occasionally timings or routes change for comfort and safety.
Marine stingers (jellyfish)
- In Far North Queensland, the higher-risk period is usually Nov–May. Stinger nets may be in place at some mainland beaches, and stinger suits are commonly used on reef trips in season—check with the crew on the day and follow local advice.
Sun, heat & hydration
- UV is high to extreme year-round. Bring a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, reef-safe SPF 50+, and a 1 L+ refillable bottle. Light, breathable clothing works best; add a light jacket for cooler Tablelands evenings.
Weather flexibility
- If rain, wind or park notices affect conditions, the itinerary may be re-sequenced or adjusted to keep the experience safe and enjoyable.

I had the extreme pleasure to be part of the small boutique tour with Via Travel Australia. Jason, our guide, was a balance of fun, knowledge, great activities and suggestions. It was my first tour in over 10 years and if I had known what an amazing job Jason, Tara, and the rest of the crew at Via does each and every day - well I would have been on a tour with them sooner! Through the recent floods, storms and re-routing…..the team had it covered. We felt safe and taken care of. We had a brilliant group of people; it felt like we were all traveling with friends. I cannot recommend the Via team enough, the hotels, activities, options, meals, ability to turn on a dime, and company were all exceptional.

I had the most amazing 18 day trip up the East Coast of Australia with Via travel! Jason, our tour guide, was a wealth of knowledge! He was so much fun, organised and really flexible! He is definitely highly experienced and knows Australia inside and out! The tour group was small which meant moving from place to place was a lot easier and we could be flexible about our plans each day! We stayed in great accommodation, a lot of which was locally owned which I really enjoyed. It was nice to stay in smaller rooms of three people, I got to stay with my two friends for the whole trip which was epic! We packed so much into the tour. Even on days where we were travelling more, Jason squeezed in little nuggets to break up the journeys. I felt we covered everything I wanted to see on the East Coast and would definitely recommend it for anyone looking to travel in a smaller group setting! The highlight of the trip was Magnetic Island, our accommodation was brilliant and even though we had a free day, Jason took us around the island to see all the best spots, wild koalas, wallabies and waterfalls!!

I recently embarked on a tour from Brisbane to Cairns, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience! From start to finish, Jason, our tour guide, made the journey incredibly enjoyable. His knowledge, enthusiasm, and attention to detail truly elevated the entire trip. One of the highlights was our stop at Magnetic Island, where the fun seemed endless. Jason orchestrated fantastic activities that allowed us to explore the island's beauty while creating memories that will last a lifetime. From snorkeling adventures to relaxing beach picnics, every moment was filled with excitement and wonder. What truly set this tour apart was the incredible group dynamic fostered by Jason. He had a remarkable ability to bring people together, creating a sense of camaraderie among us all. Whether we were sharing stories around the table or embarking on an early morning hike, the bond we formed made the journey even more special. Overall, this tour exceeded all expectations, thanks in large part to Jason's exceptional guidance and the fantastic group dynamic. If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure from Brisbane to Cairns, look no further. This tour is an absolute must! Five stars all the way.

We were lucky enough to travel with Jason as our tour guide up the Gold Coast from Sydney to Cairns. It was the trip of a lifetime. The tour was full of experiences, knowledge, fun while learning about the culture of Australia, the history, the wildlife, the plant life and sea life. I cannot speak highly enough of the experience with Via Travel Australia. The places chosen to stay were unique and not all big commercial hotels. The group dinners were well coordinated. The ability to ask the guide questions as they came up and the personal commentary as the group was small enough not to get lost in the crowd. Every detail down to Jason shopping for a bbq at the hotel including some native foods like kangaroo. We got to see them, pet them and taste them if we chose to. He even took the time to drive us to find a Kasawari bird in the wild. I will definitely be doing more tours with Via Travel Australia… 5 stars all the way!

I recently had the pleasure of joining a Via tour travelling up the East Coast of Australia from Sydney to Port Douglas. It was a fabulous trip full of surprises and a huge variety of activities. All were included which I appreciated as it becomes annoying when every option incurs an additional charge. The accommodation was fabulous; we were surprised to find that we often ended up in a small studio with our own laundry facilities. Breakfast was included every morning and we were often taken to wonderful local cafes. But beating all was our guide Eoin who ensure everything was fun and ran smoothly. On our particular trip the weather caused a few issues but he ensured back up plans were made. His sense of humour and sense of fun too the trip to another level. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I actually only did the Brisbane to cairns portion of this tour, but had others in our group who completed the entire thing. They pack so much fun times into for my group only a week, but I never felt rushed at any of the locations. They always gave us ample time to see everything and enjoy the sites. From Fraser Island, to the Whitsundays, the Atherton Tablelands, and a day on the Great Barrier Reef. As a small group tour your able to get close knit with everyone and meet many people from all around the world. Our tour guide Justin was amazing, so informative, full of energy, and one of the best tour guides making sure everyone had the best time. I’m fact one day we were supposed to be having a long driving day, and our bus broke, we waited at the hotel for some time, but Justin problem solved until he was able to find us another form of transportation. The included meals were great, and the locations Justin picked to give us as an option for dinners on our first night somewhere was always great food. I would highly recommend Via Travel to anyone, especially if you get Justin as a guide.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Sydney-Brisbane Adventure trip! Easy going agenda, with full respect to the land and the people. The hotels, meals, and particularly the obligatory Aussie BBQ were great. Byron Bay was a bliss, wish I stayed a month :) Would skip Dorrigo and Newy, but understand that’s en route to nicer places! Shout out to Eoin for being such a legend! Careful - you will want to move to Australia after this trip! 100% recommended!

Local Insights
Local Insights
Country & Culture
- You’ll travel on the lands of the Turrbal/Yuggera, Yuwibara, Djiru, Yidinji, Djabugay, Kuku Yalanji and Eastern Kuku Yalanji peoples. Respect signage at cultural sites; ask before photographing people or ceremonies.
- Reef and rainforest areas are living cultural landscapes. Local guides may share Traditional Owner perspectives—listen first and follow guidance.
Best Time to Go (Comfort vs. Crowd)
- Great all-round: May–Oct (dry season) brings warm days, lower humidity and clearer water.
- Quieter value windows: Mar–Apr and Sep–Nov outside school holidays.
- Peak periods: Australian school holidays (esp. late Dec–Jan, Easter) fill Airlie Beach, Cairns & Port Douglas quickly—pre-book popular restaurants and reef/flight add‑ons.
Ocean & Reef Savvy
- Swim between the red‑and‑yellow flags at patrolled beaches. Rips can occur on otherwise calm days.
- Stingers (jellyfish): Higher risk typically Nov–May; stinger suits are commonly used on reef trips in season—follow crew advice.
- Trade winds can freshen mid‑year in the Whitsundays; operators choose the most sheltered sites available on the day.
Wildlife Etiquette
- You may encounter turtles, rays, reef fish, and, on land, cassowaries near Mission Beach. Sightings are never guaranteed. Keep distance, do not feed wildlife, and store food securely.
- Cassowary caution: If encountered, keep space, do not run or approach, and never attempt to feed.
Rainforest Realities (Daintree & Tablelands)
- Expect humidity, mossies and short, heavy showers, even in the dry. Light long sleeves and repellent help.
- Boardwalks can be slippery after rain; wear treaded shoes and use handrails.
- Freshwater systems (like Lake Eacham) are delicate—avoid soaps and sunscreen in the water where advised.
Getting Around & Connectivity
- Mobile coverage is generally good along the coast, but patchy north of the Daintree River. Download offline maps and playlists.
- Public transport cards: If you extend your stay, Brisbane uses go card; Cairns is more car/foot oriented with local buses.
Money & Tipping
- Australia is largely cashless. Cards/tap-to-pay are standard, with small minimums at some kiosks. Tipping is optional—rounding up or adding a small amount for great service is appreciated, not expected.
Food & Water
- Tap water is safe to drink—carry a 1 L+ bottle. Reef days often have chilled water refills aboard.
- Excellent access to diet-friendly options in Airlie Beach, Cairns & Port Douglas. Mission Beach is smaller—plan snacks if you have specific requirements.
Events & Season Notes
- Whale migration passes the coast roughly Jun–Nov; keep an eye out from headlands (no guarantees).
- Wet season (approx. Nov–Apr) brings lush rainforest, full waterfalls and occasional storm systems; itineraries can be resequenced for safety.
Drones & Rules
- Drones are restricted or prohibited in many parks and near wildlife. Always check local signage and regulations before flying.
Leave No Trace
- Use formed tracks/boardwalks, pack out all rubbish, use reef‑safe sunscreen, and keep soaps out of natural waterways. Small habits, big impact.

Measure Your Co2Tour FAQ's
Where and when is the meeting point?
Meet the group at 5:00 pm in Brisbane (typically The Point Hotel Brisbane) for a short orientation. Final meeting details are confirmed in the pre-departure information.
What level of fitness is required?
Easy overall. Expect short walks (roughly 1–7 km on selected days), warm weather, and a few steps/boardwalks. You should be comfortable walking unaided and getting on/off small boats.
Is this good for solo travellers?
Yes. It’s easier to meet people in a small group, logistics are handled, and shared twin rooms help keep costs down. Solo travellers booking Twin Share are paired with a same-gender roommate; Private Single rooms are available (limited, higher rate).
More FAQ's
Where does the tour finish?
In Cairns after breakfast on Day 7 (or Day 9 if you add the Port Douglas & Daintree extension).
Is a flight included?
Yes. A domestic flight Brisbane → Proserpine (Whitsundays) is included. Return or onward flights after the tour are self-arranged.
How big is the group?
Small and social—up to ~16 guests.
What level of fitness is needed?
Easy. Expect short boardwalks and lookout walks, relaxed reef and island days, and one longer coach travel day.
What meals are included?
6 breakfasts and 2 lunches (Whitsundays cruise and Great Barrier Reef day). Other meals are flexible so you can try local spots.
Are national park fees and listed activities included?
Yes. All listed entries and guided experiences are covered, including the Whitsundays cruise and Great Barrier Reef day.
Can dietary needs be accommodated?
Generally yes—advise at booking so the operator can plan with hotels and cruise partners.
How much luggage can I bring?
Coach space is limited: 1 × 20 kg bag + 1 × 5 kg daypack works best. Airline checked baggage limits apply to the included domestic flight (see final documents).
Is this suitable for solo travellers?
Yes. Solo travellers booked in Twin Share are paired with a same-gender guest. Private Single rooms are available (supplement applies).
What’s the accommodation like?
Hand-picked boutique hotels/resorts with private ensuites in Brisbane, Airlie Beach, Mission Beach and Cairns (plus Port Douglas on the 9-day).
Do I need to be a confident swimmer?
No. Reef and beach swims are optional. Snorkel gear is provided on included boat days, and non-swimmers can enjoy the glass-bottom boat.
What about jellyfish (stingers)?
In tropical QLD, stinger risk is typically higher Nov–May. Operators commonly provide/require stinger suits in season; follow crew advice on the day.
I get seasick—any tips?
Bring motion-sickness tablets and take them before boarding (per instructions). Staff choose the most sheltered sites available on windy days.
Will there be free time?
Yes. Airlie Beach, Cairns (and Port Douglas on the 9-day) include unstructured time for cafés, markets, and optional add-ons.
Is travel insurance required?
Strongly recommended for medical, cancellation and disruption coverage. Keep policy details handy.
Is the tour suitable for mobility-impaired travellers?
Unfortunately no. Guests should be able to walk unaided on short tracks, steps and uneven or sandy surfaces.
Are there age limits?
Minimum age 12. Travellers 12–17 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Not suitable for children 11 and under.
What happens if weather disrupts plans?
Safety first. The operator may re-sequence or adjust activities (e.g., reef sites, daily timings) to suit conditions.
Who runs this tour—how does booking work?
Zero Trace Tours is a marketplace. A vetted operator runs the tour and provides on-ground logistics and final confirmations. Booking is made through Zero Trace Tours; the operator delivers the experience.
How “green” is this trip?
Each booking funds a counter-impact to balance estimated emissions, with a 200% offset applied to the itinerary’s CO₂e estimate. See the Impact page for the current approach.
Anything else I should pack?
A 1 L+ refillable bottle, reef-safe SPF 50+, hat, sunglasses, lightweight long sleeves for sun, a light rain shell, and a warm layer for cooler Tablelands evenings. A small dry bag is handy for boat days.

BOOKING & PAYMENT FAQ's
What’s the deposit & payment process?
Choose Tour
Pick Dates
Reserve Spot
Sort Logistics
Adventure Time!
Here’s how it works—clean, simple, no surprises:
A) "Book with Deposit"
- Place a deposit. You’ll pay the deposit at checkout.
- Tell us the details. You’ll receive an email asking for your tour name/date, passenger details, and any special requests (room type, extras, dietaries, etc.).
- We secure your spots. If everything’s clear, we confirm your booking by email so you can lock flights and plan the rest.
- If we need anything (e.g., room configuration, add-on activities), we’ll ask—then issue confirmation once sorted.
- Final balance invoice. After confirmation, you’ll be invoiced the remainder in line with the trips booking terms & conditions (each trip/partner has its own timeline but full payment is generally required at least 30 days prior to departure).
- If we are unable to confirm your spot: you’ll receive a full refund of your deposit. Zero stress.
B) Instant confirmation route (selected trips)
- Some departures use live operator booking calendars. These can deliver instant confirmation inside the operator’s system.
- If you book this way, the operator’s terms & conditions apply immediately (including payment schedules and change/cancellation rules).
Good to know
- Each trip may have slightly different deadlines and deposit rules—You can find the terms and conditions for your chosen booking on the listing page.
- You can still flag special requests after deposit—earlier is better for availability.
What’s your cancellation & refund policy?
Before your booking is confirmed
- If we can’t confirm your spots after you’ve paid a deposit, we’ll issue a full refund of that deposit.
After your booking is confirmed
- Cancellations follow the operator’s cancellation schedule (varies by trip and how close you are to departure).
- Expect possible fees or non-refundable items (e.g., internal flights, permits, certain accommodations).
- If a refund or credit is due, we’ll process it once the operator releases the funds and pass it back to your original payment method.
Instant-confirmation bookings (live operator calendars)
- The operator’s T&Cs apply immediately on these. Some departures are non-refundable or have stricter windows.
How to cancel
- Email us your booking reference, names on the booking, and a one-line request (“Please cancel”).
- We’ll reply with the exact penalties/refund or credit per your operator before proceeding.
If the operator cancels or significantly changes your trip
- You’ll be offered an alternative date, a travel credit, or a refund according to that operator’s policy. We’ll advocate for the best outcome for you.
Good to know
- Refunds are returned to the original payment method; bank/FX fees aren’t usually recoverable.
- Travel insurance is your friend for recovering non-refundable costs.
- The earlier you contact us, the better your options typically are.
Can I change dates or transfer my booking?
Short answer: Usually yes, but it depends on the operator’s rules and how close you are to departure.
Date changes
- We’ll check new-date availability with the operator.
- If a change is possible, you’ll pay any applicable operator change fee plus any price difference for the new date.
- The closer to departure, the tighter (and costlier) changes become; some trips treat late changes as a cancel + rebook under the operator’s policy.
Transfer to another person (name change)
- Many operators allow a name change/transfer up to a certain cut-off.
- Fees and deadlines vary by operator and services booked (e.g., flights may be non-transferable).
Instant-confirmation bookings
- If you booked via a live operator calendar, the operator’s T&Cs apply immediately. Some departures are non-changeable or have stricter windows.
How to request a change
- Email us with your booking reference, preferred new date/person’s details, and any flexibility.
- We’ll confirm options, fees, and any price differences before making changes.
Pro tips
- Ask early—more seats = more options, lower fees.
- Consider travel insurance that covers change/cancellation costs.
- Always check booking terms and conditions, links displayed on each tour page under the overview.
Are you accredited / is my money protected?
Yes. Your money is protected by our own accreditation and safeguards, plus the protections of our tour partners and the payment methods we use.
Our business safeguards
- Legally registered business with documented booking & refund policies.
- Commercial insurance appropriate to our operations.
- VTIC Quality Tourism Accreditation (Quality Tourism Accredited Business) confirming we meet industry standards for customer service, safety, and risk management.
Operator-level protection
- We partner only with established operators who maintain their own financial protections and clear refund/credit policies.
- When you book via a live operator calendar, payment is processed directly by the operator and their protections/terms apply immediately.
How your payment is handled
- All card payments run through a secure, PCI-compliant gateway; we don’t store your full card details.
- If you book through a live operator calendar, payment is processed directly into the operator’s system, and their terms & protections apply immediately.
Your legal rights
- Your purchase is also covered by consumer laws in your country/state (fair trading/refund rights). We reference the applicable jurisdiction on your paperwork.
Extra peace of mind
- Paying by credit card may add chargeback protection from your card issuer.
- We strongly recommend travel insurance to cover situations outside operator/consumer protections (your own cancellation, medical, delays).
Do you offer price matching?
Absolutely. Our prices update live from the operator, but if you spot the same tour on the same dates with the same inclusions and terms advertised for less — even in a public sale or promo — we’ll match it.
Already booked? We’ll refund the difference to your original payment method (eligibility applies, based on the final checkout price including taxes/fees from an authorised seller). And yes, the matched price still includes our 200% carbon offset — no dilution of benefits.
Do I need travel insurance?
Not for every trip—but for most travellers, we strongly recommend it
Some itineraries and partner operators do require insurance (especially remote treks, glacier walks, or bookings made via live operator calendars with mandatory cover).
When it’s required
- Certain partners/departures make insurance compulsory and may ask for proof before departure. If you book one of these, their T&Cs apply immediately.
What good cover includes
- Medical treatment & emergency evacuation/repatriation (high limits).
- Trip cancellation/interruption (protects your deposit and balance if plans change).
- Baggage & travel delay, and supplier default where available.
- Coverage for all activities on your itinerary (e.g., trekking, glacier hikes, kayaking) and any relevant altitudes/conditions.
- 24/7 assistance hotline and a clear claims process.
When to buy
- At booking. That way, cancellation benefits start immediately and you’re covered if something crops up before you travel.
How to share proof
- Email us your policy certificate (names, policy number, assistance phone).
- If you booked via an instant-confirmation operator calendar, follow their proof instructions and deadlines exactly.
Are departures guaranteed?
Most departures run as planned, but guarantees depend on the operator and minimum numbers. If there’s a wobble, we’ll tell you fast and give you options.
How it works
- Minimum group size: Most partners need a minimum number of travellers to confirm a trip.
- When we confirm: Each operator has a confirmation window (often 30–60 days before departure). We monitor load and update you as status changes.
- Any listing from "G-Adventures" will be guaranteed to run with a booking
If a trip is under-subscribed
- We’ll contact you with clear options:
Move to another date (same tour)
Switch to a comparable trip
Full refund of monies paid (per the operator’s terms)
- Any price differences for new dates/trips will be discussed before you decide.
If a trip is suspended (weather, park closures, strikes, force majeure)
- First, we’ll look to re-route or adjust (e.g., alternative park, similar activities).
- If that’s not viable, you can move dates, choose a different trip, or receive a refund/credit according to the operator’s policy.
Our promise
- Proactive comms: We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more—no last-minute surprises if we can help it.
- No pressure choices: You pick the outcome; we handle the admin.
- Flight advice: Until your tour is confirmed, book flexible/refundable flights or add insurance that covers schedule changes.
