Tour Itinerary
Day 1 | Thredbo River Track

Distance: 7km · Time: ~2hrs · Grade: Easy–Moderate

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Canberra into the alpine country, with a stop in Cooma for morning tea and a chance to visit the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre. From there, the road climbs into the Thredbo Valley, where the first walk of the tour begins.

The trail follows the Thredbo River from Dead Horse Gap into the village—an easy and picturesque introduction to the high country. Expect snow gums, granite outcrops, and wooden footbridges. Keep watch on the water, too—trout and even platypus have been spotted here.

Evening accommodation is nestled in tranquil alpine surrounds. After a relaxed arrival, the group shares a welcome platter and enjoys a nourishing two-course dinner. Guides will provide a trip briefing using local maps to introduce the trails ahead.

Day 2 | Charlotte Pass & Carruthers Peak

Distance: 13km · Time: 5–6hrs · Grade: Moderate–Hard

This alpine circuit from Charlotte Pass delivers one of the most dramatic day walks in Kosciuszko National Park. The trail climbs steadily past Hedley Tarn and the strikingly beautiful Blue Lake—a jewel of the region and one of its few glacial lakes.

From here, the route ascends to Carruthers Peak, where an exposed ridgeline reveals uninterrupted views across the Main Range, Lake Albina, and the vast western slopes stretching toward Victoria.

The return journey loops along the ridgeline, offering a series of breathtaking vantage points before descending back to Charlotte Pass.

Return to the lodge by late afternoon, with time to rest and refresh before gathering for a hearty dinner and trail tales shared around the table.

Day 3 | Mount Kosciuszko Summit

Distance: 18km · Time: 8hrs · Grade: Moderate–Hard

Australia’s highest peak takes centre stage today. A scenic chairlift from Thredbo Village delivers walkers to the Main Range, where a well-formed trail climbs steadily through alpine meadows and snow gum country.

At the summit of Mount Kosciuszko (2,228m), enjoy sweeping views across the Snowy Mountains and deep into the Australian Alps. The return route follows a quieter descent via Dead Horse Gap, weaving through forested ridges and shaded gullies.

The day concludes with a celebratory dinner at a local restaurant in Jindabyne, marking the high point—literally and figuratively—of the journey.

Day 4 | Porcupine Rocks & Distillery Lunch

Distance: 8km · Time: ~2hrs · Grade: Easy–Moderate

The final walk is a short but rewarding climb through snow gums and granite outcrops to the lookout at Porcupine Rocks. From the top, take in expansive views across the Thredbo River Valley and the Perisher Range—a last dose of alpine beauty before the journey winds down.

After the walk, the group enjoys a farewell lunch at Wildbrumby Kitchen & Distillery—a relaxed and characterful setting to reflect on the past four days.

Return to Canberra is expected by late afternoon.

Weather Expectations

Weather Expectations

The Snowy Mountains are as unpredictable as they are spectacular. In alpine country, four seasons can show up in a single day—so preparation is key.

Expect daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C in the warmer months, with much cooler mornings and nights—sometimes dipping below 5°C, even in summer. Spring and autumn bring crisp air, fewer crowds, and the occasional dusting of snow at higher elevations.

The alpine sun is strong, the wind can be sharp, and sudden showers aren’t uncommon—especially above the tree line. A warm layer, sun protection, and a waterproof shell are essentials every day.

This is mountain hiking at its finest: raw, refreshing, and unforgettable—rain, shine, or snow flurry.

Local Insights

Local Insights — Snowy Mountains / Kosciuszko National Park (NSW)

Why this region: Australia’s alpine roof delivers glacier-carved lakes, wildflower meadows (Dec–Feb), and the country’s highest point (Mt Kosciuszko, 2,228 m)—plus thermal pools, bike bridges, schnapps, and big-sky nights. Come for the summit stories; stay for the local quirks.

At a glance

  • Where: Thredbo–Perisher–Charlotte Pass hub, with Jindabyne as the service town.
  • Best seasons: Summer & early autumn for hikes and flowers; June–Sept for snow.
  • Vibe: Alpine villages, European-style mountain culture, and a deep sense of Country.

When to go (and what changes)

  • Wildflowers: Peak displays typically December–January; expect daisies, buttercups, and alpine herbs framing the boardwalks.
  • Snow season: June to October long weekends. Some alpine roads close (see Need-to-knows), chains come into play, and villages buzz.
  • Shoulder months: March–April bring cooler, clearer hiking with fewer crowds.

Getting there & around

  • Drive times: Roughly 2 hours from Canberra; ~5 hours from Sydney (longer in peak snow traffic).
  • Park entry: Vehicle fees apply on Alpine Way and Kosciuszko Road. Buy online or at the Snowy Region Visitor Centre (Jindabyne).
  • Winter hack: Kosciuszko Rd closes between Perisher and Charlotte Pass in winter. If heading to Perisher/Blue Cow, consider Bullocks Flat Skitube (parking outside the fee zone on that section of Alpine Way).

Local know-how (the stuff people actually ask)

  • Snow chains: 2WDs must carry chains in winter on designated alpine roads (e.g., Alpine Way Thredbo↔Tom Groggin). 4WD/AWD are often exempt but still recommended to carry them when it’s dumping.
  • Drones: Approval required to launch/land in NSW national parks. Alpine wildlife and other visitors will thank you.
  • Trip prep: Submit an NPWS Trip Intention Form and carry a PLB (free hire at Jindabyne/Perisher/Tumut/Khancoban visitor centres). Weather swings fast—even in summer.
  • Fragile country: Stay on formed tracks; alpine bogs and fens are slow-growing, water-filtering ecosystems—one shortcut can leave a long-term scar.

Culture & Country

This landscape sits on Monero Ngarigo, Ngunnawal, Wolgalu and Wiradjuri Country. The high plains were a gathering place for ceremony and seasonal food journeys (think Bogong moth lore). Walk with respect—names, stories and sites endure.

Must-dos across the region

  • Summit a continent: The Thredbo → Mt Kosciuszko boardwalk hike is ~13 km return (chairlift assists the climb).
  • Main Range magic: A big day loop for fit hikers—glacial lakes (like Blue Lake), high ridgelines, and views that make your camera feel small.
  • Blue Lake lookout: One of only four mainland glacial cirque lakes—turquoise on blue-sky days, moody in mist.
  • Dead Horse Gap: Snow gum forests, valley views; sunrise here paints the Ramshead Range in sherbet tones.
  • Yarrangobilly Caves & 27 °C Thermal Pool (north of the main resorts): Soak under snow-dusted gums in winter or after a summer walk.
  • Thredbo Valley Track (TVT): Roll (or stroll) beside the river over suspension bridges—choose a short family section or go the full 35 km to Jindabyne.
  • Seamans Hut: A poignant 1929 stone refuge on the summit route—part history lesson, part safety net.

Eat, drink & local favourites

  • Jindabyne is the all-rounder for groceries, gear, and lakeside eats.
  • Wildbrumby Distillery (Crackenback): Schnapps & gin with alpine views—very Snowies.
  • Dalgety Brewing Co: Country brewery by the Snowy River; easy day trip and a proper taste of the high country.

Wildlife & ecology (look, don’t touch)

  • Mountain pygmy-possum: Australia’s alpine icon; populations in Kosciuszko show encouraging recovery after fire and moth declines.
  • Bogong moths: Their summer migration fuels the alpine food web and local stories—one reason night skies here feel alive.
  • Please stick to boardwalks and rock—those sphagnum bogs are living water filters.

Safety & conditions (no drama is the best drama)

  • Weather can flip fast year-round; carry layers, rain gear, warm gloves/hat even on bluebird days.
  • Chains & closures: Check alpine road status and carry chains when required.
  • Recent rescues in sudden conditions are a reminder: map, nav, and a PLB are not “overkill,” they’re “home for dinner.”

Quick packing cues

In summer: sun hat, SPF 50+, bug net (if you’re sweet), 2–3 L water, warm layer, rain shell.
In winter: chains (if 2WD), insulated layers, waterproofs, food thermos (your future self will applaud).
Always: PLB, first-aid, paper map/compass, headlamp.

Low-key golden hours

  • Sunset: Charlotte Pass Lookout for Main Range alpenglow.
  • Sunrise: Dead Horse Gap or the Thredbo River flats for mist and frost-sparkle.
  • Stargazing: Any clear night away from village lights—bring a puffy and a hot chocolate plan.

The “not-just-adventure” list

  • Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre (Cooma): Hands-on stories of the Scheme that shaped the region.
  • Lake days: Jindabyne for paddleboards, trout talk, and shoreline rambles.
  • Events: Summer hiking/MTB programs and festivals in Thredbo keep the vibe rolling when the snow melts.

Accommodation (3 lodge nights; regional benchmark): ≈ 60 kg
All meals (12 × ~2.5 kg): ≈ 30 kg
Chairlift energy proxy: ≈ 5 kg

Subtotal: ≈ 265 kg
+10% uncertainty uplift: ≈ 26 kg
Estimated total per person: ≈ 290 kg CO₂e

Reporting focus is per person. Group total (10 guests) is shown only for context.

Group Total (context, 10 guests)

≈ 2.9 t CO₂e for the departure
(Offsets are applied per person only: ≈ 580 kg CO₂e retired per traveller.)

Assumptions (transparent)

  • Origin hub fixed: Sydney for all travellers (nearest major city to Canberra).
  • Aviation: Distance-based; WTT included; RF = 1.9 to reflect non-CO₂ warming.
  • Road distance: Page confirms return transport from Canberra + on-tour transfers; a 550 km conservative allowance is used for the 4-day program.
  • Accommodation: Lodge nights accounted via room-night benchmarks (prevents underestimation in cold-climate heating).
  • Meals: Every meal during the trip window counted, regardless of inclusions.
  • Uncertainty: +10% uplift applied to subtotal to cover unknowns.

Tour FAQ's
How fit do I need to be for this walk?

Not superhuman, just comfortably active. Expect moderate full-day walks with some elevation gain. You’ll cover up to 12km in a day, but it’s not a race—and there's plenty of time to rest, take photos, and soak it all in.

What kind of accommodation is provided?

Guests stay in cozy alpine-style lodgings with comfortable beds and warm communal areas—perfect for unwinding after a mountain day. Rooms are twin-share with private or shared bathrooms, and a single supplement is available if you'd prefer your own space.

Are meals and snacks provided throughout the tour?

Yes!. All meals are included—from hearty breakfasts to trail snacks and two-course dinners. Common dietary needs (vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free) can be catered for with notice. Just mention them at the time of booking.

How do I get to the tour’s starting point?

The tour begins and ends in Canberra, with a designated pick-up and drop-off at the Crowne Plaza Canberra. You'll travel in a comfortable mini-coach to and from the Snowy Mountains. Guests are responsible for their own travel to Canberra before the tour departure.

Will there be snow on the trails?

Not usually—but it depends on the season. This tour runs during the warmer months, when snow has mostly melted. That said, early spring and late autumn can still bring patches on higher ground. Your guides will adjust routes if needed, and snow gear isn’t required.

Can I book a private room on this tour?

Yes—single travellers can request a room to themselves by paying a single supplement fee. Availability is limited and subject to confirmation at the time of booking.

Standard accommodation is twin-share. If you're travelling solo and don’t opt for the supplement, you’ll be paired with a same-gender traveller when possible.

Prefer your own space? Just tick the single supplement option during checkout

Adventure Time!

Here’s how it works—clean, simple, no surprises:

A) "Book with Deposit"

  1. Place a deposit. You’ll pay the deposit at checkout.
  2. Tell us the details. You’ll receive an email asking for your tour name/date, passenger details, and any special requests (room type, extras, dietaries, etc.).
  3. We secure your spots. If everything’s clear, we confirm your booking by email so you can lock flights and plan the rest.
  4. If we need anything (e.g., room configuration, add-on activities), we’ll ask—then issue confirmation once sorted.
  5. Final balance invoice. After confirmation, you’ll be invoiced the remainder in line with the trips booking terms & conditions (each trip/partner has its own timeline but full payment is generally required at least 30 days prior to departure).
  6. If we are unable to confirm your spot: you’ll receive a full refund of your deposit. Zero stress.

B) Instant confirmation route (selected trips)

  • Some departures use live operator booking calendars. These can deliver instant confirmation inside the operator’s system.
  • If you book this way, the operator’s terms & conditions apply immediately (including payment schedules and change/cancellation rules).

Good to know

  • Each trip may have slightly different deadlines and deposit rules—You can find the terms and conditions for your chosen booking on the listing page.
  • You can still flag special requests after deposit—earlier is better for availability.
What’s your cancellation & refund policy?

Before your booking is confirmed

  • If we can’t confirm your spots after you’ve paid a deposit, we’ll issue a full refund of that deposit.

After your booking is confirmed

  • Cancellations follow the operator’s cancellation schedule (varies by trip and how close you are to departure).
  • Expect possible fees or non-refundable items (e.g., internal flights, permits, certain accommodations).
  • If a refund or credit is due, we’ll process it once the operator releases the funds and pass it back to your original payment method.

Instant-confirmation bookings (live operator calendars)

  • The operator’s T&Cs apply immediately on these. Some departures are non-refundable or have stricter windows.

How to cancel

  • Email us your booking reference, names on the booking, and a one-line request (“Please cancel”).
  • We’ll reply with the exact penalties/refund or credit per your operator before proceeding.

If the operator cancels or significantly changes your trip

  • You’ll be offered an alternative date, a travel credit, or a refund according to that operator’s policy. We’ll advocate for the best outcome for you.

Good to know

  • Refunds are returned to the original payment method; bank/FX fees aren’t usually recoverable.
  • Travel insurance is your friend for recovering non-refundable costs.
  • The earlier you contact us, the better your options typically are.
Can I change dates or transfer my booking?

Short answer: Usually yes, but it depends on the operator’s rules and how close you are to departure.

Date changes

  • We’ll check new-date availability with the operator.
  • If a change is possible, you’ll pay any applicable operator change fee plus any price difference for the new date.
  • The closer to departure, the tighter (and costlier) changes become; some trips treat late changes as a cancel + rebook under the operator’s policy.

Transfer to another person (name change)

  • Many operators allow a name change/transfer up to a certain cut-off.
  • Fees and deadlines vary by operator and services booked (e.g., flights may be non-transferable).

Instant-confirmation bookings

  • If you booked via a live operator calendar, the operator’s T&Cs apply immediately. Some departures are non-changeable or have stricter windows.

How to request a change

  • Email us with your booking reference, preferred new date/person’s details, and any flexibility.
  • We’ll confirm options, fees, and any price differences before making changes.

Pro tips

  • Ask early—more seats = more options, lower fees.
  • Consider travel insurance that covers change/cancellation costs.
  • Always check booking terms and conditions, links displayed on each tour page under the overview.
Are you accredited / is my money protected?

Yes. Your money is protected by our own accreditation and safeguards, plus the protections of our tour partners and the payment methods we use.

Our business safeguards

  • Legally registered business with documented booking & refund policies.
  • Commercial insurance appropriate to our operations.
  • VTIC Quality Tourism Accreditation (Quality Tourism Accredited Business) confirming we meet industry standards for customer service, safety, and risk management.

Operator-level protection

  • We partner only with established operators who maintain their own financial protections and clear refund/credit policies.
  • When you book via a live operator calendar, payment is processed directly by the operator and their protections/terms apply immediately.

How your payment is handled

  • All card payments run through a secure, PCI-compliant gateway; we don’t store your full card details.
  • If you book through a live operator calendar, payment is processed directly into the operator’s system, and their terms & protections apply immediately.

Your legal rights

  • Your purchase is also covered by consumer laws in your country/state (fair trading/refund rights). We reference the applicable jurisdiction on your paperwork.

Extra peace of mind

  • Paying by credit card may add chargeback protection from your card issuer.
  • We strongly recommend travel insurance to cover situations outside operator/consumer protections (your own cancellation, medical, delays).
Do you offer price matching?

Absolutely. Our prices update live from the operator, but if you spot the same tour on the same dates with the same inclusions and terms advertised for less — even in a public sale or promo — we’ll match it.

Already booked? We’ll refund the difference to your original payment method (eligibility applies, based on the final checkout price including taxes/fees from an authorised seller). And yes, the matched price still includes our 200% carbon offset — no dilution of benefits.

Do I need travel insurance?

Not for every trip—but for most travellers, we strongly recommend it

Some itineraries and partner operators do require insurance (especially remote treks, glacier walks, or bookings made via live operator calendars with mandatory cover).

When it’s required

  • Certain partners/departures make insurance compulsory and may ask for proof before departure. If you book one of these, their T&Cs apply immediately.

What good cover includes

  • Medical treatment & emergency evacuation/repatriation (high limits).
  • Trip cancellation/interruption (protects your deposit and balance if plans change).
  • Baggage & travel delay, and supplier default where available.
  • Coverage for all activities on your itinerary (e.g., trekking, glacier hikes, kayaking) and any relevant altitudes/conditions.
  • 24/7 assistance hotline and a clear claims process.

When to buy

  • At booking. That way, cancellation benefits start immediately and you’re covered if something crops up before you travel.

How to share proof

  • Email us your policy certificate (names, policy number, assistance phone).
  • If you booked via an instant-confirmation operator calendar, follow their proof instructions and deadlines exactly.

Are departures guaranteed?

Most departures run as planned, but guarantees depend on the operator and minimum numbers. If there’s a wobble, we’ll tell you fast and give you options.

How it works

  • Minimum group size: Most partners need a minimum number of travellers to confirm a trip.
  • When we confirm: Each operator has a confirmation window (often 30–60 days before departure). We monitor load and update you as status changes.
  • Any listing from "G-Adventures" will be guaranteed to run with a booking

If a trip is under-subscribed

  • We’ll contact you with clear options:

Move to another date (same tour)

Switch to a comparable trip

Full refund of monies paid (per the operator’s terms)

  • Any price differences for new dates/trips will be discussed before you decide.

If a trip is suspended (weather, park closures, strikes, force majeure)

  • First, we’ll look to re-route or adjust (e.g., alternative park, similar activities).
  • If that’s not viable, you can move dates, choose a different trip, or receive a refund/credit according to the operator’s policy.

Our promise

  • Proactive comms: We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more—no last-minute surprises if we can help it.
  • No pressure choices: You pick the outcome; we handle the admin.
  • Flight advice: Until your tour is confirmed, book flexible/refundable flights or add insurance that covers schedule changes.
