Litchfield National Park is the traditional Country of the Werat, Koongurrukun, Mak Mak Marranunggu and Warray peoples, whose ancestral spirits are believed to have shaped the landscape, plants and animals still present today.
The famous magnetic termite mounds are precisely aligned north-south to minimise sun exposure on the broad sides, keeping the internal temperature stable year-round — a natural air-conditioning system built by the termites using saliva, soil and droppings.
Unlike Kakadu, Litchfield has no large saltwater crocodiles in its swimming holes, making it one of the few safe places in the Top End to swim in natural rock pools.
Florence Falls drops 15 metres into a deep plunge pool surrounded by monsoon rainforest, while Tolmer Falls features a dramatic double drop carved through ancient sandstone.
