Weather Expectations
Seasonal Weather Expectations
Vietnam runs north–south across multiple climate zones, so conditions shift as you move from Hanoi/Ninh Bình to the central coast and down to Ho Chi Minh City/Mekong. Expect warm–hot temps year-round and humidity most months; rain usually arrives in brief, heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzles.
Northern Vietnam — Hanoi, Ninh Bình (Sapa on 15-day extension)
- Spring (Mar–May): 20–30 °C, rising humidity; light showers and mist at times. Lush rice paddies and comfortable touring.
- Summer (Jun–Aug): 28–35 °C, humid; short, heavy downpours common—great for green landscapes, bring a light rain shell.
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): 22–30 °C, less humid; some storms in Sep. Often the most comfortable months for walking and viewpoints.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): 12–20 °C; cooler mornings/evenings, occasional mist.
- Sapa (highlands): Typically 5–10 °C cooler than Hanoi; Dec–Feb can feel cold (bring warm layers), Jun–Sep is warm, green and sometimes stormy.
Hạ Long / Bái Tử Long Bay
- Apr–Sep: Warm 28–32 °C; great for kayaking/swims. Jul–Sep can see tropical storms—routes/timings may adjust for safety.
- Oct–Mar: Cooler 15–22 °C; Jan–Mar may bring fog/haze that softens the views (and water feels brisk).
Central Coast — Huế, Hội An, Đà Nẵng
- Dry season (Feb–Aug): 26–35 °C, lots of sun; May–Aug is hot—pace days and hydrate. Best beach conditions around Mar–Aug.
- Wet season (Sep–Jan): 22–28 °C with heavier rain, especially Oct–Nov (periodic flooding possible in low areas). Typhoon risk peaks Sep–Nov; itineraries may pivot inland or shift timings.
- Hải Vân Pass: Exposed ridgeline can be breezy and a touch cooler than the coast.
Southern Vietnam — Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta
- Dry (Dec–Apr): 28–35 °C, sunnier and less humid—easy river days and city walks.
- Wet (May–Nov): 27–33 °C, humid with afternoon thunderstorms; showers are intense but usually brief. The delta is vivid and lively after rain; boats operate as conditions allow.
Crowd & Festival Notes
- Tết (Lunar New Year, late Jan–Feb): Peak domestic travel; some shops and sights reduce hours.
- Apr–May holiday weeks: Busier hubs; pre-book tailoring, trains and bay cabins.
- Mid-Autumn Festival (Sep): Lantern buzz in Hội An; evenings feel festive (and busy).
Comfort Tips (quick wins)
- Hydrate + electrolytes in hot months; plan shade breaks.
- Light, breathable layers year-round; add warm layers for Sapa/winter nights up north.
- Grippy walking shoes for wet limestone paths and boat landings.
- Compact rain shell/umbrella for sudden downpours.
- Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses—UV is strong even on hazy days.
Good to know: Tropical weather can change quickly. Day plans flex to keep the best experiences front and centre—bay cruises, coastal drives and highland walks may shift times/routes to match local conditions.

What To Pack
What to Pack
Pack light and heat-smart. You’ll be moving by train, road and boat, with stairs, stations and humid afternoons—small, organised and quick-dry wins the day.
Bags & Organisation
- Main bag: 35–45 L carry-on backpack or small roller/duffel (soft sides fit trains/lockers best).
- Daypack (15–20 L): water, sun protection, camera, rain shell, snacks.
- Packing cubes, lightweight lock, reusable water bottle, mini dry bag (for bay/delta).
- Optional: luggage forwarding/storage in major hubs (ask your guide).
Clothing (mix & match layers)
- Everyday heat kit: 3–4 quick-dry tees/shirts, 2 shorts/light trousers, 1 easy outfit for dinners.
- Light layers: breathable long-sleeve for sun/temples, thin fleece or light jumper for AC and cooler northern evenings.
- Rain shell/compact umbrella year-round (showers can be short but heavy).
- Temple respect: shoulders and knees covered for certain sites.
- Swimwear for the bay boat and beach time; sarong or quick-dry towel.
Footwear
- Broken-in walking shoes/trainers with grip (wet limestone can be slick).
- Sandals/thongs for showers/boats; lightweight socks (bring spares).
Seasonal & Regional Adds
- North (Hanoi/Ninh Bình): light jumper for Dec–Feb; Sapa (15-day) needs warm layers/thermals in winter and a sturdier rain shell in summer storms.
- Central coast (Huế/Hội An): hotter Mar–Aug; prioritise ultra-breathable fabrics.
- South (Ho Chi Minh City/Mekong): year-round warm—sun hat and electrolytes help.
Overnight Trains & Homestays
- Sleep kit: earplugs, eye mask, lightweight travel pillowcase.
- Thin sleepwear suitable for shared settings; small toiletries kit.
- Optional: compact sleep sheet if you like your own layer.
Bay & Boat Days
- Dry bag for phone/camera, reef-safe sunscreen, quick-dry top/shorts, and a spare set to change into.
- Motion-sickness tablets if needed.
Toiletries & Health
- Travel-size basics; personal meds + copies of prescriptions.
- High-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent (DEET or picaridin), hand sanitiser.
- Compact first-aid (plasters, antiseptic wipes, blister care, pain relief).
- Rehydration/electrolyte sachets (humidity + walking = smart insurance).
- Tissues/wet wipes; small rubbish bag (bins can be scarce).
Tech & Power
- Universal adaptor (Vietnam uses common two-pin types; voltage ≈220 V).
- Power bank, charging cables, offline maps/translator.
- Cloud backup for key docs and photos.
Documents & Money
- Passport (valid beyond travel), travel insurance, visas/entry proof (if required).
- Debit/credit cards plus some cash (small notes handy for markets/boats).
- Emergency contacts; digital copies of essentials.
Low-Impact Travel Touches
- Reusable bottle/tote/chopsticks; avoid single-use where possible.
- Reef-safe sunscreen; stay on paths in rice terraces and karst zones.
Nice-to-Haves
- Lightweight scarf/buff (sun, wind, temple cover).
- Compact laundry soap/pegs (coin laundries common).
- Notebook/pen for tailor measurements and food finds.
Leave at Home
- Heavy hard-shell suitcases, multiple dress outfits, and anything you can’t carry up stairs in the heat—the overnight trains and bay gangways favour travellers who pack nimble.
Local Insights
Local Insights — Vietnam North to South
(Hanoi • Ninh Bình / Pù Luông • Huế • Hội An • Hạ Long / Bái Tử Long • Ho Chi Minh City • Mekong)
Culture & Etiquette
- Greetings: A friendly “Xin chào” (sin chow) goes far; “Cảm ơn” (kahm uhn) = thank you.
- Temples & homes: Shoes off at the door; shoulders/knees covered in active worship spaces; hat off inside.
- Hands & feet: Pass money/objects with the right hand (or both); avoid touching anyone’s head.
- Queuing & space: Lines are looser than at home—go with the flow but keep your place.
- Bargaining: Normal in markets; smile, counter politely, and walk away if it’s not for you.
Money & Connectivity
- Cash is king at markets, small cafés and homestays; ATMs are common in cities. Keep small notes for boats, snacks and tips.
- Cards increasingly work in hotels/shops; ask about surcharges.
- eSIM/SIM is easy to set up; coverage is strong along this route.
- Keep a zip pouch for notes—humidity + paper dong = confetti.
Getting Around (and across the street!)
- Crossing roads: Step in steadily, make eye contact, keep a predictable pace—scooters flow around you.
- Overnight trains: Cabins are shared; pack earplugs/eye mask and a small toiletries kit.
- Bay & delta boats: Quick-dry clothing + a dry bag for phone/camera = stress-free deck time.
- Bikes & kayaks: Helmets and life vests are provided for included activities—use them.
Food & Drink Notes
- Street eats are the point. Follow busy stalls with high turnover.
- Water: Drink bottled/filtered; avoid tap water. Ice at busy cafés is generally purified.
- Veg-friendly: Easy in cities; fish sauce (nước mắm) sneaks into many dishes—say “chay” (vegetarian) and ask to skip fish sauce.
- Coffee culture: Try cà phê sữa đá (iced milk coffee) or egg coffee in Hanoi.
- Allergies: Learn the key words; your guide can help you prep a short card in Vietnamese.
Tailors & Gifts (Hội An)
- Tailoring: Day 1 fitting, Day 2 tweak, Day 3 pickup = sweet spot. Bring a favourite garment or photos for reference.
- Shipping: Ask for flat-packed garments and a tracking number if mailing home.
Weather Moves
- Heat & humidity: Midday breaks help; carry electrolytes.
- Rains: Downpours are short and dramatic—light rain shell > heavy jacket.
- Sapa (15-day): Cooler at altitude; pack a warm layer and grippy shoes for wet paths.
Health & Comfort
- Hand sanitiser, tissues and a tiny first-aid kit save the day.
- Mosquitoes: Use repellent (DEET or picaridin) at dusk, especially near rice fields and rivers.
- Sun: Wide-brim hat, sunscreen, sunglasses—UV bites even on hazy days.
Sustainability Touches
- Refill your water bottle where possible; bring a small tote and refuse extra bags.
- Reef-safe sunscreen on boat days; keep to marked paths on terraces and karst trails.
- Respect wildlife—no feeding, no drone buzzing over rookeries or pagodas.
Photography & Drones
- Always ask before photographing people (especially in temples and villages).
- Drones are restricted in many cultural/national sites—check local signage and your guide.
Safety & Scams (light but useful)
- Keep valuables zipped and front-facing in crowds.
- If a price isn’t displayed, confirm before buying.
- Use licensed taxis or reputable ride-hailing; agree on the fare for local boats or cyclos.
Handy Mini-Phrase Pack
- Hello: Xin chào
- Thank you: Cảm ơn
- How much?: Bao nhiêu?
- Delicious!: Ngon quá!
- Vegetarian: Ăn chay
- No/Yes: Không / Vâng
Good to know: Festival periods (Tết, major public holidays) change opening hours and crowd patterns. Your guide will adjust timings so you keep the best moments and avoid the logjams.

Is this trip better as 12 days or 15?
Both follow the same north–south route. 12 days covers Ho Chi Minh City, Hội An, Huế, Pù Luông/Ninh Bình, Hanoi and the Hạ Long / Bái Tử Long Bay overnight boat. 15 days adds extra highlands time around Sapa with village treks and a homestay.
I’m not a confident swimmer—can I still join the kayak activities?
Yes—life vests are provided and required. Kayaks operate in sheltered water and are always weather/sea-state dependent. You can opt out and relax on deck if you prefer.
What kind of accommodation is used?
City twin/double hotels, overnight sleeper trains (shared cabins), a traditional homestay in Pù Luông, and an overnight bay boat (twin/double cabin). On the 15-day version you’ll also have a Sapa village homestay plus a Sapa hotel. Equivalent properties may be used as needed.
Can I book a private room?
Single upgrades may be limited and are on request only. Trains and homestays remain shared.
More FAQ's
Are meals included?
Yes—key highlights are included (for example: Welcome Dinner in Ho Chi Minh City, Breakfasts on several days, Cooking Class Lunch in Huế, Homestay Dinners in Pù Luông and Sapa, All meals on the bay boat, and Brunch on departure from the bay). All other meals are at your own cost, which is perfect for street-food exploring.
Can dietary needs be accommodated?
Generally, yes. Vietnam is friendly to vegetarians, but fish sauce appears in many dishes—tell your guide early so venues can adjust. Allergies/intolerances should be flagged at booking and again on Day 1.
How much luggage should I bring?
Pack light—carry-on backpack or small roller. Stations have stairs and crowds. You’ll want a daypack for boat and village days. Storage/forwarding can be arranged in hubs; ask your guide.
What about the overnight trains—what should I expect?
Shared AC cabins with bunks, pillows and bedding. Pack earplugs, eye mask, a small toiletries kit and quick access to your overnight essentials. Big bags stay close by; keep valuables with you.
Is the bay cruise in Hạ Long or Bái Tử Long?
Routing uses Bái Tử Long / Hạ Long areas based on season and permits. Kayak and swim time is weather/sea-state dependent; safety calls are made locally.
What if it rains?
It will—briefly and dramatically, especially May–Oct. Plans flex (earlier starts, shifted activities). The bay, highlands and coast each have alternates to keep the day special.
Do I need a visa?
Entry rules vary by passport and trip length. Check the latest requirements for your nationality before booking and again pre-departure.
Is travel insurance required?
It’s strongly recommended for medical, cancellation and activity cover.
How do I pay for things on tour?
Cities accept cards widely, but cash is essential for markets, small cafés and homestays. ATMs are common; keep small notes for boats and snacks.
Will I have reception and Wi-Fi?
Yes in cities and towns; it can be patchy in rural/highland areas. eSIM/SIM options are easy to set up on arrival.
What power plugs are used?
Two-pin types are common; voltage is ~220 V. Bring a universal adaptor and a small power bank for long days.
Can I get clothes tailored in Hội An?
Absolutely. Plan on a Day-1 fitting, Day-2 tweak, Day-3 pickup. Bring inspiration photos or a favourite garment; consider extra luggage space or ask about shipping.
Any health tips?
Hydrate (electrolytes help), use insect repellent at dusk, and carry hand sanitiser/tissues. Stick to bottled/filtered water; busy food stalls with high turnover are a good bet.
Is tipping expected?
Not mandatory, but small tips are appreciated for great service, especially on boats, in homestays and for local guides. Your trip leader can advise sensible amounts.
What happens if conditions close a sight or route?
Your guide will pivot to well-matched alternates while preserving the heart of the experience—same spirit, safer timing.

BOOKING & PAYMENT FAQ's
What’s the deposit & payment process?
Choose Tour
Pick Dates
Reserve Spot
Sort Logistics
Adventure Time!
Here’s how it works—clean, simple, no surprises:
A) "Book with Deposit"
- Place a deposit. You’ll pay the deposit at checkout.
- Tell us the details. You’ll receive an email asking for your tour name/date, passenger details, and any special requests (room type, extras, dietaries, etc.).
- We secure your spots. If everything’s clear, we confirm your booking by email so you can lock flights and plan the rest.
- If we need anything (e.g., room configuration, add-on activities), we’ll ask—then issue confirmation once sorted.
- Final balance invoice. After confirmation, you’ll be invoiced the remainder in line with the trips booking terms & conditions (each trip/partner has its own timeline but full payment is generally required at least 30 days prior to departure).
- If we are unable to confirm your spot: you’ll receive a full refund of your deposit. Zero stress.
B) Instant confirmation route (selected trips)
- Some departures use live operator booking calendars. These can deliver instant confirmation inside the operator’s system.
- If you book this way, the operator’s terms & conditions apply immediately (including payment schedules and change/cancellation rules).
Good to know
- Each trip may have slightly different deadlines and deposit rules—You can find the terms and conditions for your chosen booking on the listing page.
- You can still flag special requests after deposit—earlier is better for availability.
What’s your cancellation & refund policy?
Before your booking is confirmed
- If we can’t confirm your spots after you’ve paid a deposit, we’ll issue a full refund of that deposit.
After your booking is confirmed
- Cancellations follow the operator’s cancellation schedule (varies by trip and how close you are to departure).
- Expect possible fees or non-refundable items (e.g., internal flights, permits, certain accommodations).
- If a refund or credit is due, we’ll process it once the operator releases the funds and pass it back to your original payment method.
Instant-confirmation bookings (live operator calendars)
- The operator’s T&Cs apply immediately on these. Some departures are non-refundable or have stricter windows.
How to cancel
- Email us your booking reference, names on the booking, and a one-line request (“Please cancel”).
- We’ll reply with the exact penalties/refund or credit per your operator before proceeding.
If the operator cancels or significantly changes your trip
- You’ll be offered an alternative date, a travel credit, or a refund according to that operator’s policy. We’ll advocate for the best outcome for you.
Good to know
- Refunds are returned to the original payment method; bank/FX fees aren’t usually recoverable.
- Travel insurance is your friend for recovering non-refundable costs.
- The earlier you contact us, the better your options typically are.
Can I change dates or transfer my booking?
Short answer: Usually yes, but it depends on the operator’s rules and how close you are to departure.
Date changes
- We’ll check new-date availability with the operator.
- If a change is possible, you’ll pay any applicable operator change fee plus any price difference for the new date.
- The closer to departure, the tighter (and costlier) changes become; some trips treat late changes as a cancel + rebook under the operator’s policy.
Transfer to another person (name change)
- Many operators allow a name change/transfer up to a certain cut-off.
- Fees and deadlines vary by operator and services booked (e.g., flights may be non-transferable).
Instant-confirmation bookings
- If you booked via a live operator calendar, the operator’s T&Cs apply immediately. Some departures are non-changeable or have stricter windows.
How to request a change
- Email us with your booking reference, preferred new date/person’s details, and any flexibility.
- We’ll confirm options, fees, and any price differences before making changes.
Pro tips
- Ask early—more seats = more options, lower fees.
- Consider travel insurance that covers change/cancellation costs.
- Always check booking terms and conditions, links displayed on each tour page under the overview.
Are you accredited / is my money protected?
Yes. Your money is protected by our own accreditation and safeguards, plus the protections of our tour partners and the payment methods we use.
Our business safeguards
- Legally registered business with documented booking & refund policies.
- Commercial insurance appropriate to our operations.
- VTIC Quality Tourism Accreditation (Quality Tourism Accredited Business) confirming we meet industry standards for customer service, safety, and risk management.
Operator-level protection
- We partner only with established operators who maintain their own financial protections and clear refund/credit policies.
- When you book via a live operator calendar, payment is processed directly by the operator and their protections/terms apply immediately.
How your payment is handled
- All card payments run through a secure, PCI-compliant gateway; we don’t store your full card details.
- If you book through a live operator calendar, payment is processed directly into the operator’s system, and their terms & protections apply immediately.
Your legal rights
- Your purchase is also covered by consumer laws in your country/state (fair trading/refund rights). We reference the applicable jurisdiction on your paperwork.
Extra peace of mind
- Paying by credit card may add chargeback protection from your card issuer.
- We strongly recommend travel insurance to cover situations outside operator/consumer protections (your own cancellation, medical, delays).
Do you offer price matching?
Absolutely. Our prices update live from the operator, but if you spot the same tour on the same dates with the same inclusions and terms advertised for less — even in a public sale or promo — we’ll match it.
Already booked? We’ll refund the difference to your original payment method (eligibility applies, based on the final checkout price including taxes/fees from an authorised seller). And yes, the matched price still includes our 200% carbon offset — no dilution of benefits.
Do I need travel insurance?
Not for every trip—but for most travellers, we strongly recommend it
Some itineraries and partner operators do require insurance (especially remote treks, glacier walks, or bookings made via live operator calendars with mandatory cover).
When it’s required
- Certain partners/departures make insurance compulsory and may ask for proof before departure. If you book one of these, their T&Cs apply immediately.
What good cover includes
- Medical treatment & emergency evacuation/repatriation (high limits).
- Trip cancellation/interruption (protects your deposit and balance if plans change).
- Baggage & travel delay, and supplier default where available.
- Coverage for all activities on your itinerary (e.g., trekking, glacier hikes, kayaking) and any relevant altitudes/conditions.
- 24/7 assistance hotline and a clear claims process.
When to buy
- At booking. That way, cancellation benefits start immediately and you’re covered if something crops up before you travel.
How to share proof
- Email us your policy certificate (names, policy number, assistance phone).
- If you booked via an instant-confirmation operator calendar, follow their proof instructions and deadlines exactly.
Are departures guaranteed?
Most departures run as planned, but guarantees depend on the operator and minimum numbers. If there’s a wobble, we’ll tell you fast and give you options.
How it works
- Minimum group size: Most partners need a minimum number of travellers to confirm a trip.
- When we confirm: Each operator has a confirmation window (often 30–60 days before departure). We monitor load and update you as status changes.
- Any listing from "G-Adventures" will be guaranteed to run with a booking
If a trip is under-subscribed
- We’ll contact you with clear options:
Move to another date (same tour)
Switch to a comparable trip
Full refund of monies paid (per the operator’s terms)
- Any price differences for new dates/trips will be discussed before you decide.
If a trip is suspended (weather, park closures, strikes, force majeure)
- First, we’ll look to re-route or adjust (e.g., alternative park, similar activities).
- If that’s not viable, you can move dates, choose a different trip, or receive a refund/credit according to the operator’s policy.
Our promise
- Proactive comms: We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more—no last-minute surprises if we can help it.
- No pressure choices: You pick the outcome; we handle the admin.
- Flight advice: Until your tour is confirmed, book flexible/refundable flights or add insurance that covers schedule changes.
