Fjords, Ice &; Viking Footsteps | Iceland, East Greenland & Labrador — 16-Day Atlantic Expedition
Tour Overview

Fjords, Ice & Viking Footsteps | Iceland, East Greenland & Labrador16-Day Atlantic Expedition

Sail from Reykjavík to St John’s across the North Atlantic’s wild edge—East Greenland’s glacier-carved fjords and colourful villages, the narrows of Prince Christian Sound, and onward to Labrador and Newfoundland where Norse stories meet raw coastline. Over 16 days, this expedition cruise blends sea days, Zodiac landings, and expert talks for a front-row seat to ice, cliffs, and big, quiet skies.

Expect flexible days shaped by weather and ice: step ashore at Tasiilaq, trace deep channels like Skjoldungen, visit the Hvalsey Norse ruins, then cross the Davis Strait to remote Labrador before closing with Newfoundland icons L’Anse aux Meadows and Gros Morne. Aboard MS Expedition, settle into an outside cabin with en suite, roam the 360° observation deck, and gear up with a loan expedition parka and insulated boots—then let the North do the talking.

Day 1 | Reykjavík/Keflavík Embarkation

Arrive in Iceland and step aboard MS Expedition. Unpack in your outside cabin with en suite, meet the expedition team, and watch the harbour lights slip by as we set a northerly course. The briefing sets the tone: flexible plans, sharp eyes, and a taste for wild coastlines.

Stay: Aboard MS Expedition (en suite cabin).

Included meals: Dinner.

Day 2 | Seabird Highways & Open Water

A blue-water day across the Denmark Strait. Settle into the rhythm of the ship—grab deck time with hot drinks, scan slicks for whales, and learn your fulmars from your kittiwakes during expert talks. Sunset finds sea and sky trading colours.

Stay: Aboard MS Expedition.

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner.

Days 3 & 4 | East Greenland’s Doorway & Silent Fjords

Day 3 | Tasiilaq—Colour on the Edge of Ice

Anchor off Tasiilaq and run ashore by Zodiac. Wander between painted houses and the church spire, with mountains rising like teeth behind town. When conditions allow, a short walk delivers big views and a feel for life at the edge of the ice.

Stay: Aboard MS Expedition.

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner.

Day 4 | Skjoldungen—Glacier-Cut Calm

Thread into the Skjoldungen system: hard blue ice, soft green moss, and waterfalls unravelling from hanging glaciers. If tides and ice permit, a Zodiac landing lets you step into a world where the only sound is meltwater and the click of cameras.

Stay: Aboard MS Expedition.

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner.

Days 5 & 6 | Southern Tip Drama—Prince Christian Sound & Aappilattoq

Day 5 | Prince Christian Sound—The Long Stone Corridor

Sail a granite hallway where cliffs rise sheer from mirror-still water and bergs drift like sculptures. On deck, watch for fresh calving scars and narrow side channels that vanish into shadow.

Stay: Aboard MS Expedition.

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner.

Day 6 | Aappilattoq—Village Under Spires

Conditions permitting, land by Zodiac in Aappilattoq, a tiny hamlet backdropped by needle-like peaks. It’s all scale here—bright homes, big mountains, and a harbour where bergy bits nudge the shore.

Stay: Aboard MS Expedition.

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner.

Days 7 & 8 | Norse Echoes & the Davis Strait Crossing

Day 7 | Hvalsey—Stone & Saga

Go ashore at Hvalsey, one of Greenland’s best-preserved Norse sites. Stand inside the roofless stone church and picture oars biting water a thousand years ago. Quiet, wind, and history do the rest.

Stay: Aboard MS Expedition.

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner.

Day 8 | Westbound Blue—Across the Davis Strait

A day to watch horizons and let the lectures deepen what you’ve seen—ice, geology, and human threads tying Arctic shores together. Keep a lens ready; blows and fins often appear without ceremony.

Stay: Aboard MS Expedition.

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner.

Day 12 | Woody Point—Gateway to Gros Morne

Anchor off Woody Point in Bonne Bay. From here, Gros Morne reveals exposed mantle rock and tablelands that read like an open geology textbook. Land by Zodiac and explore viewpoints where fjords carve deep into the land.

Days 13 & 14 | Down the Coast to the Cape

Day 13 | Coastal Run—Birdlines & Headlands

Stay: Aboard MS Expedition.

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner.

Day 14 | Approaching St John’s—Harbour Ahead

Land gives way to the approach lanes for St John’s. If daylight favours you, scan for the city’s bright “jellybean” houses and the cut of the harbour mouth framed by steep rock.

Weather Expectations

Seasonal Weather Expectations

Overview
An ocean-to-arctic arc: Iceland, East & South Greenland, the Davis Strait, Labrador, and Newfoundland. Expect cool temps, frequent wind, and fast changes. Dress for wind chill and spray even on calm-looking days.

June–July (early season)

  • Air: ~2–10 °C in Greenland; ~6–12 °C in Iceland/Newfoundland.
  • Conditions: Brisk, often bright with passing showers; lingering pack ice near East Greenland can lower temps further.
  • Notes: Earliest wildflowers ashore; fog possible along cold/warm water boundaries.

August (mid season)

  • Air: ~4–12 °C Greenland; ~8–16 °C Iceland/Newfoundland/Labrador.
  • Conditions: The most settled window; still expect wind and periodic rain.
  • Notes: Best mix of daylight and (relatively) milder days; sea fog still common.

September (late season)

  • Air: ~0–8 °C Greenland; ~5–12 °C Newfoundland/Labrador.
  • Conditions: Crisper, clearer spells with cooler nights; increased chance of autumn gales.
  • Notes: Tundra colours ashore; daylight hours shorten steadily.

Wind, Sea & Visibility

  • Sea state can change quickly—swells and chop are normal on crossings (Denmark/Davis Strait).
  • Wind chill often makes it feel 5–10 °C colder on open decks and Zodiacs.
  • Fog can thicken near ice or temperature fronts; expect sudden visibility shifts.

Precipitation

  • Light rain/drizzle and wet Zodiac landings are part of the deal. Waterproof outer layers keep you comfortable (jacket + over-trouser).

Daylight

  • Long days June–August (late sunsets/early sunrises) favour extended deck time.
  • Shortening days in September bring superb low-angle light for photos—and cooler evenings.

Landing Conditions

  • Terrain ranges from rocky beaches to mossy tundra and boardwalks. Surfaces may be slippery with spray or rain; grippy, ankle-supporting footwear is essential.
  • Operations are weather/ice-dependent; the team may adjust landing times or switch to scenic Zodiac cruising when conditions require.

Practical Layering Cue

  • Base layer (thermal) → warm mid-layer (fleece/wool) → windproof, waterproof shell. Add hat, gloves, and a neck gaiter; keep a dry spare layer in your daypack.

Local Insights

Local Insights

  • Ice is the boss: Plans flex around wind, swell, and pack ice. When the team pivots to a different fjord or swaps a landing for Zodiac cruising, it’s to get you the best (and safest) wildlife and scenery window.
  • Zodiac etiquette = smooth landings: Wear your shell, zip pockets, sit where directed, and keep hands clear at the pontoon. Cameras in dry bags save heartbreak when a wave says hi.
  • Wind chill math: Whatever the forecast says, subtract 5–10 °C on open decks or Zodiacs. A neck gaiter + glove liners = small kit, big comfort.
  • Wildlife watching that works: Keep quiet and patient. Scan edges—tide lines, cliff ledges, bergy bits. Binoculars beat phone zoom every time.
  • Greenland & Nunatsiavut respect: You’re visiting living communities, not museum sets. Ask before photographing people, stick to paths, and follow your guide’s cultural cues.
  • Photo light is a gift: Low-angle light and fog make East Greenland look cinematic. On overcast days, ice pops bluer—perfect for shots of bergs and glacier faces.
  • Seas & stomachs: Crossings (Denmark/Davis Strait) can be lively. Start seasickness remedies early, choose mid-ship, lower decks to sleep, and nibble regularly.
  • Layering rhythm: Have a “grab kit” by your cabin door (parka, hat, gloves, binoculars). Wildlife announcements are real-time—be deck-ready in seconds.
  • Boots & parka logistics: Expedition boots are loaned; try them on day one with your landing socks. The parka’s yours—great wind block on deck even when you’re not ashore.
  • Sound carries: In calm bays, voices travel. Keep chatter low on landings so birds and marine mammals don’t, well, notice you.
  • Tundra footing: Rock, moss, and wet kelp can be slick. Place feet deliberately, and use trekking poles if balance is iffy.
  • Time & tides: Landings follow tide windows. If you get spare minutes aboard, the observation deck during a tide change can be prime for feeding seabirds.
  • Ship life hacks: Dry your gloves on the radiator rails, stow camera batteries in an inner pocket to keep them warm, and label your parka—many look identical after lectures.
  • Story layering: Hebron, Hopedale, L’Anse aux Meadows—bring questions. The more you ask the expedition team, the richer each landing becomes.

Adventure Time!

Adventure Time!

Here’s how it works—clean, simple, no surprises:

A) "Book with Deposit"

  1. Place a deposit. You’ll pay the deposit at checkout.
  2. Tell us the details. You’ll receive an email asking for your tour name/date, passenger details, and any special requests (room type, extras, dietaries, etc.).
  3. We secure your spots. If everything’s clear, we confirm your booking by email so you can lock flights and plan the rest.
  4. If we need anything (e.g., room configuration, add-on activities), we’ll ask—then issue confirmation once sorted.
  5. Final balance invoice. After confirmation, you’ll be invoiced the remainder in line with the trips booking terms & conditions (each trip/partner has its own timeline but full payment is generally required at least 30 days prior to departure).
  6. If we are unable to confirm your spot: you’ll receive a full refund of your deposit. Zero stress.

B) Instant confirmation route (selected trips)

  • Some departures use live operator booking calendars. These can deliver instant confirmation inside the operator’s system.
  • If you book this way, the operator’s terms & conditions apply immediately (including payment schedules and change/cancellation rules).

Good to know

  • Each trip may have slightly different deadlines and deposit rules—You can find the terms and conditions for your chosen booking on the listing page.
  • You can still flag special requests after deposit—earlier is better for availability.
What’s your cancellation & refund policy?

Before your booking is confirmed

  • If we can’t confirm your spots after you’ve paid a deposit, we’ll issue a full refund of that deposit.

After your booking is confirmed

  • Cancellations follow the operator’s cancellation schedule (varies by trip and how close you are to departure).
  • Expect possible fees or non-refundable items (e.g., internal flights, permits, certain accommodations).
  • If a refund or credit is due, we’ll process it once the operator releases the funds and pass it back to your original payment method.

Instant-confirmation bookings (live operator calendars)

  • The operator’s T&Cs apply immediately on these. Some departures are non-refundable or have stricter windows.

How to cancel

  • Email us your booking reference, names on the booking, and a one-line request (“Please cancel”).
  • We’ll reply with the exact penalties/refund or credit per your operator before proceeding.

If the operator cancels or significantly changes your trip

  • You’ll be offered an alternative date, a travel credit, or a refund according to that operator’s policy. We’ll advocate for the best outcome for you.

Good to know

  • Refunds are returned to the original payment method; bank/FX fees aren’t usually recoverable.
  • Travel insurance is your friend for recovering non-refundable costs.
  • The earlier you contact us, the better your options typically are.
Can I change dates or transfer my booking?

Short answer: Usually yes, but it depends on the operator’s rules and how close you are to departure.

Date changes

  • We’ll check new-date availability with the operator.
  • If a change is possible, you’ll pay any applicable operator change fee plus any price difference for the new date.
  • The closer to departure, the tighter (and costlier) changes become; some trips treat late changes as a cancel + rebook under the operator’s policy.

Transfer to another person (name change)

  • Many operators allow a name change/transfer up to a certain cut-off.
  • Fees and deadlines vary by operator and services booked (e.g., flights may be non-transferable).

Instant-confirmation bookings

  • If you booked via a live operator calendar, the operator’s T&Cs apply immediately. Some departures are non-changeable or have stricter windows.

How to request a change

  • Email us with your booking reference, preferred new date/person’s details, and any flexibility.
  • We’ll confirm options, fees, and any price differences before making changes.

Pro tips

  • Ask early—more seats = more options, lower fees.
  • Consider travel insurance that covers change/cancellation costs.
  • Always check booking terms and conditions, links displayed on each tour page under the overview.
Are you accredited / is my money protected?

Yes. Your money is protected by our own accreditation and safeguards, plus the protections of our tour partners and the payment methods we use.

Our business safeguards

  • Legally registered business with documented booking & refund policies.
  • Commercial insurance appropriate to our operations.
  • VTIC Quality Tourism Accreditation (Quality Tourism Accredited Business) confirming we meet industry standards for customer service, safety, and risk management.

Operator-level protection

  • We partner only with established operators who maintain their own financial protections and clear refund/credit policies.
  • When you book via a live operator calendar, payment is processed directly by the operator and their protections/terms apply immediately.

How your payment is handled

  • All card payments run through a secure, PCI-compliant gateway; we don’t store your full card details.
  • If you book through a live operator calendar, payment is processed directly into the operator’s system, and their terms & protections apply immediately.

Your legal rights

  • Your purchase is also covered by consumer laws in your country/state (fair trading/refund rights). We reference the applicable jurisdiction on your paperwork.

Extra peace of mind

  • Paying by credit card may add chargeback protection from your card issuer.
  • We strongly recommend travel insurance to cover situations outside operator/consumer protections (your own cancellation, medical, delays).
Do you offer price matching?

Absolutely. Our prices update live from the operator, but if you spot the same tour on the same dates with the same inclusions and terms advertised for less — even in a public sale or promo — we’ll match it.

Already booked? We’ll refund the difference to your original payment method (eligibility applies, based on the final checkout price including taxes/fees from an authorised seller). And yes, the matched price still includes our 200% carbon offset — no dilution of benefits.

Do I need travel insurance?

Not for every trip—but for most travellers, we strongly recommend it

Some itineraries and partner operators do require insurance (especially remote treks, glacier walks, or bookings made via live operator calendars with mandatory cover).

When it’s required

  • Certain partners/departures make insurance compulsory and may ask for proof before departure. If you book one of these, their T&Cs apply immediately.

What good cover includes

  • Medical treatment & emergency evacuation/repatriation (high limits).
  • Trip cancellation/interruption (protects your deposit and balance if plans change).
  • Baggage & travel delay, and supplier default where available.
  • Coverage for all activities on your itinerary (e.g., trekking, glacier hikes, kayaking) and any relevant altitudes/conditions.
  • 24/7 assistance hotline and a clear claims process.

When to buy

  • At booking. That way, cancellation benefits start immediately and you’re covered if something crops up before you travel.

How to share proof

  • Email us your policy certificate (names, policy number, assistance phone).
  • If you booked via an instant-confirmation operator calendar, follow their proof instructions and deadlines exactly.

Are departures guaranteed?

Most departures run as planned, but guarantees depend on the operator and minimum numbers. If there’s a wobble, we’ll tell you fast and give you options.

How it works

  • Minimum group size: Most partners need a minimum number of travellers to confirm a trip.
  • When we confirm: Each operator has a confirmation window (often 30–60 days before departure). We monitor load and update you as status changes.
  • Any listing from "G-Adventures" will be guaranteed to run with a booking

If a trip is under-subscribed

  • We’ll contact you with clear options:

Move to another date (same tour)

Switch to a comparable trip

Full refund of monies paid (per the operator’s terms)

  • Any price differences for new dates/trips will be discussed before you decide.

If a trip is suspended (weather, park closures, strikes, force majeure)

  • First, we’ll look to re-route or adjust (e.g., alternative park, similar activities).
  • If that’s not viable, you can move dates, choose a different trip, or receive a refund/credit according to the operator’s policy.

Our promise

  • Proactive comms: We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more—no last-minute surprises if we can help it.
  • No pressure choices: You pick the outcome; we handle the admin.
  • Flight advice: Until your tour is confirmed, book flexible/refundable flights or add insurance that covers schedule changes.
