Should You Tip on Guided Tours? A Straightforward Guide

Should You Tip on Guided Tours? A Straightforward Guide 💸

Tipping. It’s one of the most common pre-trip questions—and one of the trickiest to answer. At Zero Trace Tours, we don’t believe in awkward guesswork, so here’s a no-nonsense guide to tipping on adventure tours around the world.

🤷 Why It’s So Confusing

Tipping customs vary wildly from country to country, and even between types of tours. On some expeditions, it’s expected. On others, it’s not part of the culture at all. That’s why it helps to know what’s normal—before you go.

🌍 General Tipping Guidelines (by Region)

Asia

Tipping is not traditionally expected, but on guided group tours, it’s increasingly appreciated. A modest tip ($5–10 USD/day) is a nice gesture.

Europe

Wages are generally higher, but tips for guides are welcome—especially on longer or more service-heavy trips. Budget around €10/day for your main guide.

South America

Tipping is standard on multi-day tours. Guides and porters often rely on tips to supplement income. Think ~$10–15 USD/day for the lead guide, and ~$5/day for support crew.

Africa

Tipping is expected and very important in many regions. Safari guides and support staff often receive ~$15–20/day in tips. Check your tour info for suggested amounts.

Australia & New Zealand

No need to stress—tipping isn’t the norm here, but it’s appreciated if service is exceptional. Think of it as a bonus, not a requirement.

🧭 Our Tip: Let the Service Guide You

Tipping isn’t compulsory—but it is a powerful way to show appreciation. If your guide goes above and beyond, feel free to thank them directly with cash or a heartfelt note.

✅ Some Quick Do’s and Don’ts

  • 💵 Do bring small bills in local currency

  • ✍️ Do leave a thank-you note if you don’t want to give cash

  • Don’t feel pressured—your safety and enjoyment are already covered

  • 🙋 Do ask us if you’re unsure what’s appropriate
