Not Included

✈️ Getting There and Back

Travel to and from the tour isn’t included—flights, trains, tuk-tuks, time machines… you’re on your own for that part. Just make sure you arrive at the meeting point on time—we wouldn’t want to head off without you.

💵 Tips

Tipping isn’t included and never expected—but always appreciated. If your guides or crew knock it out of the park (and they usually do)

Give what feels right. It’s your call, always.

🧳 Travel Insurance

We highly recommend having travel insurance sorted before your trip. Think of it as your behind-the-scenes safety net—for medical treatment, lost baggage, unexpected delays, or needing to cancel last minute. Some activities may carry a bit of risk (that’s part of the fun), so it’s smart to have cover that fits the adventure.

No one wants to use it (or pay for it) —but if you need it, you’ll be glad you have it.

📄 Visas

Visa rules change more than mountain weather. You're responsible for securing any required visas for your trip, so please check with your local embassy or consulate well in advance.

🍻 Personal Spending

Bring a little extra for things like drinks, snacks, shopping, the odd hot shower, and any optional add-ons along the way. You know how you travel—plan accordingly.

Weather Expectations ⛅

Costa Rica's dry season, considered summer by the locals, runs from mid-November to April and temperatures vary significantly depending on the region and elevation. Along the coast and the Caribbean flatlands, temperatures average 25–34˚C (77–93˚F). At the mid-level elevations temperatures average between 17–26˚C (63–79˚F).

Co2 Footprint 👣

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves
Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping
local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?

It works out on average at 147kg of CO2 emissions per
person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities,
guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to
the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers
separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all
corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans,
we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display
here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a
way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?

Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an
average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?

Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with
all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner
with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre
programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural
habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its
wildlife.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to book through Zero Trace Tours?

Yep! All our partners are verified, and payments are secure. If you're ever unsure, you're welcome to contact the tour provider directly to confirm we're legit before booking through us and making your trip a climate positive one!.

Are flights or extra accommodation included?

Only the tour itself is included. You’ll need to get yourself to the starting point (and back), but we do offer optional flight impact add-ons to make sure those nasty flight emissions are offset

Are the listings always up to date?

We do our best—but availability can shift fast. Once you book, we double-check everything with the operator before confirming. This may be instant but please allow upto 48 hour for some providers, they might be out adventuring

Do you run the tours yourselves?

Nope—we’re a marketplace. We partner with the best independent tour providers worldwide. You’ll always know who runs the tour, and we only list tours we trust completely.

How does the ‘Zero Trace’ part actually work?

Every time you book a tour, we make a promise: we’ll fund real-world landscape restoration that goes twice as far as your estimated environmental impact.

That could mean replanting native forests, restoring wetlands, or supporting rewilding projects—depending on where it’s needed most. You explore. We restore.
